Baking Ingredients/Baking Supplies in Kolkata

source: recipegarden.com

Finding good quality ingredients for baking in India has always been a difficult task. All our desire to bake that gorgeous fancy cake that we drooled on and on at someone's blog residing in USA or UK, has to die an early death because of this dearth of most baking ingredients. Forget about the fancy gumpaste or gluten free flours, even good  food colours or a simple block of good cooking chocolate is not locally or easily available. Also you need to know and look for them at the right place.  It took me a long time before I could lay my hands on simple white cupcake liners. They who have relatives abroad could be lucky but not all relatives are generous enough to give you a share of their precious luggage space to carry your prepaid tiny box of  paper liners or gumpaste cutters.

In my 5 years stay in Bangalore (also the time when I started baking seriously) I discovered many places to get my baking goodies but this recent shift to Kolkata made me look for them from scratch.  So here is my little attempt to jot down all the places that stock up some of the basic and not so basic baking supplies in Kolkata.

Before I start let me make an disclaimer that if you find this post similar to someone else's yes am totally inspired by Suma's post that helped a lot of people to look for preciosu baking items in right places. With a big thanks to her Am shamelessly following her here.

Online stores are supplying almost everything under the sun these days. Try ordering from them if you dont get the required item locally but check the courier price and the courier company they use. Most of the time the shipping charges are on a very higher side and in Kolkata if the courier service is not one of those top strata you get very bad service. Trust be I had very bad experience so be sure to check this before you place your order.
  1. Gourmetco.in
  2. ccdshop.com you get almost everything
  3. Bakersmart.co.in again for everything and the prices are very competitive
  4. Also there is Passionatebaking. am not sure if they have a website. Try facebook to place order to them.

I have listed only the shops in southern Kolkata, which I am familiar with. If anyone knows of any shops apart from the ones listed above please drop me a line in the comments section. I will update this post at the earliest.

For Baking Supplies in Bangalore please refer to this post of Suma. she has done one tremendous job of listing everything under one post with Google maps.

  18. looks like it is the same story in most Indian cities... I wonder if Delhi or Bombay fare better in terms of the availability of ingredients... I've always wondered why Amul does not make cream cheese and sell it? Or why strawberries are so expensive in Bangalore even though they are grown in the outskirts... Your post will be really informative for the folks in Kolkata...

  29. THANK YOU SO MUCH !! I have been going crazy trying to find baking supplies in calcutta. One question. I do not have a food processor and am unable to make my own powder sugar. I have found Truth brand superfine sugar in S.City Spencers, but I just cannot find powder sugar in Kolkata. There is one by Weikfield, but it is a mix of starch, and glucose with powder sugar. Eeyech.

If you have an idea, do let us know. We can make icing !!

Great blog. Thanks a lot !!

    ReplyDelete
  30. @SharD, The south city spencer's is the worst place to find anything. lots of thing stacked on the racks and the stuffs even dont have any idea what is what...anyways have seen weikfield icing sugar there and even in the Spencer's @ Avishar mall (Prince Anwar shah connector).

between if you have a normal mixer grinder use that to powder your sugar. dont pulse for long, give time gaps in between and later sieve to get fine powdered sugar. this is good for all bakes. but for icing you need the store bought ones.

  33. Sayantani- what a find your blog is - thanks for listing out all these shops - have been looking for cupcake liners - good to know those Gariahat shops stock them ! A friend directed me to your blog !

Agree with Vidya who says its like a bakers' treasure map !

    ReplyDelete
  34. A wonderful list, thanks so much. I have been hunting for cream cheese suppliers.

    ReplyDelete
  35. SharD -- You get icing sugar in a lot of para mudi'r dokan. Check yours. Otherwise you can get it all over New Market, Gariahat etc.

I myself powder the normal granulated sugar lightly before baking with it -- it makes mixing much faster. (I measure first and then powder.)

    ReplyDelete
  36. @Eve;s lung and Sue, thanks for your appreciation.

@Sue, Spencer's also stock Britannia cream cheese which is cheaper than the other brands. bought 1 tub last week but yet to bake with it.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Sayantani -- Spencer's South City? Haven't found it at any of the others. Will check South City out.

    ReplyDelete
  38. @Sue, yes they also have but I got mine from their anwar shah branch.

  39. Anwar Shah Connector? I tried that the other day. OK, will keep a lookout then. My husband likes cheesecake, you see. :)

Hey thanks a lot for this! I stay in Pune and my in-laws are in Kolkata. I always used to carry all my baking stuff whenever I visted because after several long and tiring searches I had failed miserbly to find a single decent shop to buy this stuff from in Kolkata. I'd once scoured a dozen shops including the spencer s and metro cash and carry to find lady fingers for my Tiramisu! Phew!! Punekars of course are blessed to have places like Dorabjee's and ABC Farms for all of this stuff and more! Thanks again. Really useful!

  80. Thanks a lot for sharing the info, I do plan to visit the new market today , the information would be very handy , I visited Spencers at New Town , they don't have yeast and even all purpose flour, do you have any idea where I can find all purpose flour please, if there is any magic formula mixing gluten powder in which flour , if you know it would be highly appreciated..

    ReplyDelete
  81. @K Singh, Glad that you found it helpful. What we get here in Kolkata as All purpose flour is the normal Maida. Any brand Ashis, Ganesh or Spencer's own brand is good enough for normal home baking. you will get wheat gluten at Babar ali or B.L. Saha in new market. just ask anyone in the hogg market area and they will help you locate these shops. you can mix 1 tbsp gluten to 1 cup of normal flour and 2 tbsp o a cup of wheat flour (atta).
both these shops also stock good quality yeast as well (both fresh and active dry).

    ReplyDelete
  82. Hi Sayantani,

  83. hi every body, nice to read ur chit chat here, very interesting. can i give u some advice. the main ingredients(back bone) of baking is cake flour and strong flour for cake and bread making.is not found in these places. u only find all purpose flour. u can make ur own too(cake flour)
sugars too are not found. eg caster, brown, light brown pure cane, liquid corn syrup, golden caster,
the only ingredient u find in confectionary decoration is butter cream.now days fondant and mousses have become very popular. try those of as cakes. jeff

  97. SS -- I've baked with the locally made white butter (it used to be available in a Lake Gardens shop, not any more). Once I adjusted the liquids to accommodate the extra water from the butter, I had no problems. Cakes came out very well, and shortcrust pastry needed no extra liquid.

  98. Hi sue! I actually try to make croissants and puff pastry with the unsalted butter and in these things i do not like a butter that is high in water content. But have to make through with what is available till i can find some really good quality white butter

  99. SS -- I agree, not at all suitable for puff pastry. I think I needed to add a little extra flour than usual for shortcrust (though not much). In cakes I had no problem. There is a dairy products shop next to the Tipu Masjid at Prince Anwar Shah - S P Mukherjee Road crossing where I was told I might find white butter but I haven't yet been there.

  119. Hi,
This was the best information available online. In-fact, I went to this Baborally Sirdar shop and got all my baking supplies from there.. one of them being the cooking chocolate. Though locating the shop using only the address is difficult, if asked any shopkeeper about baborally, they will point it correctly. :)

Thanks a lot for this valuable information ...
